In memory of...

Ellie Leach

Ellie was always such a happy girl and a favorite of ours here at Best Friends.  We never saw her without her tail wagging and she was loving to everyone that she would meet.  Ellie passed away last Friday after being diagnosed with cancer but she has left us with some of the sweetest memories.  She will be greatly missed- our thoughts go out to her family.

Say Cheese!

We thought it would be nice to show off some of the great pictures that have made it into our photo album! Some of our pet guests just love to have their pictures taken and will really ham it up for our camera! These are just a few of our favorites…enjoy!

Pet of the Week!

Charlie Wojcik

Hi there! My name is Charlie Wojcik and I'm a 13- year- old Shiba Inu. I've been visiting Best Friends Pet Care in Carmel for as long as I can remember- which is a REALLY long time! When Mom goes out of town, she always schedules playtimes for me so that I can be sure to get my daily walk. She knows how important it is for an older gentleman to stay active!
As much as I love Mom, she insists that I smell clean when I come home, so she always schedules a go- home- fresh bath (silly humans, go figure)… Anyway, I HATE baths!  My personal stylists at Best Friends are SO patient with me though and always make sure I go home smelling amazing! That makes Mom super happy which makes me happy too!!!

Is your Best Friend a Record Breaker?

Every pet is a record- breaker in their own way but this pet made the Guinness World Records!  One week ago, Guinness World Records announced that “Giant George”, a blue Great Dane hailing from Tucson, Arizona, is the new Guinness World Record holder of the Tallest Dog title. The 4 1/2- year- old Dane measures 43 inches from paw to shoulder- ¾ in taller than the former Tallest Dog title-holder, Titan. “Giant George” weighs in at a massive 245lbs. and his owners, David and Christine Nasser, say he eats about 110 lbs. of dog food each month. From nose to tail, George measures in at a whopping 7ft 3in! George is living the good life with the Nasser’s who say that he even has his own Queen Size bed.

Dr. William Wallace of the Buena Pet Clinic in Tucson , who witnessed the documentation necessary for the Guinness record, said: 'In my 45 years of experience working with giant breed dogs, without question, George is the tallest dog I have ever seen.'

Craig Glenday, Editor-In-Chief of Guinness World Records said:
“This is a hotly contested record and after some controversy and conflicting media reports we decided to send our own official adjudicator to put the final stamp on this record holder. We can indeed say now that George is the top dog. This record has also sparked great interest in finding other pet records, so we’re asking everyone to check their dog houses, scratch posts and under the bed - they just might be living with a record-breaking pet!”

Guinness World Records has launched a new search for the following pet records: Longest Ears on a Dog, Smallest Dog (Length), Oldest Dog, Smallest Cat and Oldest Cat.  Contact Guinness World Records at http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/ if you think your pet could qualify!

Pet of the Week!

Bailey Webber

Hello there!  My name is Bailey and I'm smiling because there is just SO much for me to be happy about!  Can you believe that I am almost 15 years old?!?!  I know, I know, I definitely don't look it!  It must be because I am so well taken care of and thoroughly loved.

When my Mommy and Daddy go out of town they want to make sure that I get a vacation too! That’s why they have been bringing me to visit all of my pals at Best Friends Pet Care for ages and ages. As a regular boarder here, I’m what you would call a V.I.D. - very important doggy, of course.  Mom and Dad always arrange for me to have cuddletimes and sometimes I even get doggy ice cream!!! My friends here know me so well and are always so overjoyed to see me!  I love coming to visit them because I always get the best of the best!

Pet of the Week

Jake Drics

Hi!  My name is Jake Drics and I am an 8 year-old Alaskan Malamute.  I have been visiting my buddies at Best Friends Pet Care in Carmel for years and I LOVE it here!  My pals at Best Friends Carmel are always so cheerful and excited to see me.  I am always so happy to see them too and I'm never without a smile:)  I like to talk to everyone here and they really seem to get a kick out of my voice- as a Malamute, I love to howl!  When I'm not chatting with the staff or taking my afternoon nap, I enjoy going out for my playtimes.  My family knows how much I enjoy going for a stroll so they schedule a daily walk for me!  I am such a lucky boy!  I love my buddies at Best Friends Carmel and I know they really love me too!

Valentine’s Day Playgroup excitement!!!

Love was in the air at Best Friends Carmel this past weekend as pooches romped and wrestled in our Valentine’s Day Playgroup! There wasn’t much time for hugs and kisses with all of the playing to be done, but new friends were made, toys were shared amongst old friends and sparks flew between a certain pair of pups.

Opposites really do attract and our lovely lab friend, Ellie Leach, and her Cocker Spaniel beau, Frank Shedlocke, illustrated this perfectly. We think everyone’s a winner here, but paws down, Frank and Ella won our “Cutest Canine Couple Contest”.

Future playgroup parties are in the works and since you don’t want your pooch to miss out on all the fun, call our office at (317) 848-7387 to book your reservations and schedule playgroup and other activities, or visit us on the web at http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/

Climate Changes in Indiana

By now, it seems that everyone has heard of global warming and how it already has and potentially could, have an effect on the future of our earth. However, it seems that many are not aware of the fact that this climate change could affect the wildlife and nature in our own backyards.

Scientists from the United States Global Change Research Program and the Union of Concerned Scientists are predicting that the frequency of precipitation will continue to increase (especially during the winter and spring seasons) and could cause problems like flooding to occur. A disaster like flooding can lead to other problems like soil erosion and agricultural runoff of crops, in which streams, rivers and lakes become contaminated with pesticides or fertilizers. This runoff is a threat to Indiana’s natural freshwater supply and thus, it poses a threat to every creature that relies on this water to sustain life.

Fish like salmon and trout are especially at risk because of the fact that they require cold clean water. Sadly, due to the increase in temperatures and precipitation, scientists are predicting a loss of 50- 100% of salmon and trout populations by 2050.
White-tailed deer are also at risk. Studies show that with the increase of temperatures and possible drought-like conditions, deer will seek out water sources and thus be exposed to more water loving insects like midges. Midges are disease transmitting insects that could pose a problem later into the winter season as frosts and freezing temperatures are delayed.
